Fall, and Halloween

halloween_640It’s hard to say what exactly the BEST part of fall might be. The cooler temperatures, beautiful colors, outdoor festivals, foods, sports… and much more. There is a time change to deal with, but see our previous blog on how to handle that! What are some ways you celebrate the change in season? Well, in the past people ushered in the new time of year with gatherings, festivals, food. Mid-Autumn Festival is the second most important traditional festival in China, and families celebrate by eating together, making lanterns, mooncake, and giving thanks to the moon. Then there was the Celtic festival of Samhain a couple thousand years ago, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. The Christian church changed the holiday to All Saints Day, which eventually became the secular event we now know as Halloween.

Costumes, pumpkin carving, decorating, trick or treating! Halloween like a holiday made for a child. And can be an expensive one. Halloween is second only to Christmas as a money making holiday for the retail market. Our own community sees almost as many houses decorated this time of year as in December. With a decorating contest to boot!
There are so many fun things to do this season. However you decide to celebrate the autumn season and Halloween, enjoy!
